Easter, Chocolate, and Your Smile: A Bruntsfield Guide to Enjoying the Sweet Stuff (Responsibly… ish)
Easter in Edinburgh always feels like the city collectively exhales. The cherry blossoms start showing off in Morningside and the Meadows, dogs look inexplicably happier in Merchiston, and Bruntsfield families begin the annual negotiation of how much chocolate is too much chocolate. (A philosophical question mainly.)
At Chapter One Dental, we adore this time of year. The neighbourhood feels lighter, brighter, and—let’s be honest—covered in a fine dusting of cocoa. Between Polwarth’s riverside walks and Comiston’s busying hive of culinary activity, Easter treats are everywhere. And while we’re absolutely not here to steal your joy, we are here to help you enjoy your chocolate without sacrificing your smile.
Because yes, you can have both. You can be a responsible adult and eat the bunny ears first. It’s all about balance.
The Great Easter Chocolate Tour of South Edinburgh
One of the perks of living and working in this glorious pocket of the city is the sheer abundance of artisan chocolate within walking distance. If you’re going to indulge, you may as well indulge beautifully.
Here are a few of our local favourites:
🍫 Edward & Irwyn (Morningside)
Makers of celestial honeycomb and the kind of dark chocolate that makes you close your eyes involuntarily. If you’re gifting—or self‑gifting—this Easter, their handmade creations are practically a love letter in confectionery form. Dr Ashley’s favourite are the dragon tails.
🍫 Harvest & Green (Bruntsfield)
A boutique chocolatier that feels like stepping into a cocoa‑scented dream. Their Easter specials are dangerously tempting, and we’ve seen more than one Bruntsfield resident “accidentally” buy a box for themselves. They have searched all over Scotland to gather the most delicious mini morsels for your chocolate indulgence.
🍦 Cicchetti’s Gelato (Bruntsfield)
Not chocolate, you say? Oh, but it is. Their vegan chocolate gelato is a local legend, and Easter weekend queues are practically a community event. The newest addition to the foodie landscape in Bruntsfield is quietly becoming our favourite weekend haunt. If you see us in the line… no you didn’t.
“Easter is a time of reawakening the senses and reemergence after a long dark winter. A little indulgence doesn’t hurt...in moderation.”
So… How Much Chocolate Is Actually Okay?
Let’s be real: Easter is not the time for abstinence. Nor should it be. Food is joy, tradition, nostalgia, and community all wrapped in foil.
But here’s the trick: frequency matters more than quantity.
The Golden Rule:
It’s better to enjoy your chocolate in one or two sittings rather than grazing on it all day. Every time you eat sugar, your mouth becomes more acidic for around 30 minutes. Constant nibbling means your teeth never get a break.
Other Smart (and realistic) Tips:
Drink water between treats to help rinse away sugars.
Save chocolate for after meals, when saliva production is already higher.
Choose chocolate over sticky sweets—it melts away more easily and doesn’t cling to teeth.
Dark chocolate is kinder to your enamel than milk or white chocolate. (We’re looking at you, Edward & Irwyn.)
And of course, keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Easter is not the moment to get experimental with your routine.
“We’re not here to rain on your parade but a little bit of what you like goes a long way”
Dr Ashley is partial to a praline and Dr Chris favours the tiffin. Whatever your vice, lean in and indulge just for a weekend anyway…
A Floral Plot Twist: Easter Gifts That Don’t Come Wrapped in Foil
If you’re trying to be kinder to someone’s teeth—or you simply want to stand out as the most thoughtful gift‑giver in Bruntsfield—consider swapping chocolate for flowers this year. Gorgeous Snapdragon can cater to all your floral whimsy. The beautiful Mimosa adorning their shopfront always lures Dr Ashley in.
A bouquet from one of our local florists lasts longer, looks gorgeous on a kitchen table in Polwarth or Comiston, and won’t require an emergency appointment with us in mid‑April. Plus, nothing says “I adore you” quite like a vase full of spring blooms.
(And if you also want to include a small box of artisan truffles from Deli 181… well, we’re not here to police romance.)

Introducing: The Chapter One Chocolate Amnesty
Now, because we know our community—and because we love you all too much to watch you spiral into a sugar‑coated dental disaster—we’re launching our unofficial, highly scientific, completely selfless Chapter One Chocolate Amnesty.
Here’s how it works:
Bring us any excess Easter chocolate.
Hand it over with a solemn nod of responsibility.
Walk away knowing you’ve protected your oral health.
Try not to think too hard about what happens to the chocolate next.
Will we dispose of it responsibly? Will we heroically consume it to save you from yourself? Will our team fight over the last caramel egg?
We can neither confirm nor deny. But your teeth will thank you.
Why not make your own with the family for some scrumptious homemade treats
A Sweet Season, A Healthy Smile
Living in this beautiful corner of Edinburgh means we’re surrounded by exceptional food, exceptional people, and exceptional chocolate. Easter is a celebration—of spring, of community, of indulgence—and you deserve to enjoy it fully.

From Merchiston to Morningside, from Bruntsfield to Polwarth and Comiston, we’re here to keep your smile bright—through every season, every celebration, and every chocolate‑related confession.
Happy Easter from all of us at Chapter One Dental. May your weekend be sweet, your enamel strong, and your chocolate amnesty contributions generous.
